2006 Texas Water Use Summary Estimates

This page provides the annual water use estimates for the year 2006 summarized by geographic location and by water use category; Municipal, Manufacturing, Mining, Steam Electric Power, Irrigation, and Livestock. The 2006 Water Use estimates, as well as the previously posted estimates, are subject to revision as additional data and corrections are made available to the TWDB.

The Texas Water Development Board is required to provide annual estimates of the State's water use. The accuracy and dependability of these estimates depend on obtaining accurate and timely information from the annual Water Use Survey. Response to the Survey is mandatory (Section 16.012(m) of the Texas Water Code). Beginning with the 2006 Summary Estimates by City, those cities whose primary water utility has not returned a 2006 Survey will be shown with no water use estimate due to their non-response. An estimate based on a previous year's use for these cities and utilities will temporarily be used in calculation of county-level municipal water use volumes, pending receipt of the Survey.

In addition, the mining water use estimates have historically included estimates of past water use as well as annual survey data. Beginning with the 2006 estimates, the mining water use will include only surveyed volumes and historic data only where it can be confirmed to be reliable. Due to the increasing mining activity across the state and the associated water use, TWDB staff are working to establish an estimation methodology that will allow accurate water use estimates of these activities. All additional information that can contribute to this process is welcome, and will be incorporated into the estimates as is practicable.
