Texas Water Development Board approves $5,800,000 in financial assistance to the Stephens Regional Special Utility District to finance water system improvements

AUSTIN - (January 20, 2011) - The Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) today approved by resolution financial assistance in the amount of $5,800,000 consisting of a $1,740,000 loan and $4,060,000 loan forgiveness from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund-Disadvantaged Community Program to the Stephens Regional Special Utility District (Stephens County) to finance water system improvements.

With these funds, the Stephens Regional Special Utility District (District) plans to build a one million-gallon-per-day surface water treatment plant and install 1,200 linear feet of treated water transmission mains. The District also plans to make pump station improvements.

The District serves a population of 2,652 and encompasses a six-county area, located approximately 80 miles north of Abilene. It currently provides water service to 1,450 customers.

The TWDB is the state agency charged with collecting and disseminating water-related data, assisting with regional planning and preparing the State Water Plan for the development of the state’s water resources. The TWDB administers cost-effective financial programs for the construction of water supply, wastewater treatment, flood control, and agricultural water conservation projects.
