Summary: Potential future reservoir projects in the Brazos River Basin have been identified in regional water plans submitted to the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) for inclusion in the forthcoming State Water Plan. It is anticipated that construction of the Allens Creek Reservoir project will be essential for meeting the long-term projected water demands of the region. The impact of the proposed diversion from the lower Brazos River and impoundment on Allens Creek on the effected downstream river segments must be investigated before the projects can proceed. A further concern is the possible increase in saltwater intrusion up the Brazos River estuary from the Gulf of Mexico near Freeport, Texas. The overall goal of this project is to use scientific and engineering methods to determine the instream flow needs for maintaining adequate fish habitats in the Brazos River thus ensuring the ecological health of the environment. The proposed Allens Creek Reservoir project is located about 50 miles west of Houston, Texas and approximately 60 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico. The project is expected to provide up to 90,000 acre-feet per year of water from the combined Brazos River diversion and Allens Creek impoundment features of the project. Related Webpages:
