Groundwater is a major source of water in Texas. In 2003, groundwater provided 59 percent of the 15.6 million acre-feet of water used in the state, and this usage is expected to continue - albeit at decreasing levels - through the year 2060.

The Groundwater Resources Division is responsible for all aspects of groundwater studies in the state. We monitor groundwater levels and groundwater quality in the state's, presently recognized, 9 major and 21 minor aquifers, conduct regional-scale groundwater modeling, and house and maintain water well records. We also approve groundwater districts' management plans, and provide groundwater information to citizens and lawmakers of the state.
